Compar and Contrast - Essay Example The elements of history were engraved in the stories that were left by the two writers. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway have similar time frame to tell but different experiences to share in their stories throughout their lives. In terms of the time they became popular in the field of literature, they boomed in different years but they both became famous for their works. Their works may conflict at times in terms of ideas, but throughout their career, they became friends that had eroded after certain number of years. Their friendship started when they first met each other in a bar called Dingo. Fitzgerald had accustomed to ask too much and flatter the strangers during first time conversations that gave Hemingway a negative connotation about the personality of Fitzgerald. A good example is the instance when Fitzgerald interrogated Hemingway regarding â€Å"having slept with his wife before they were married did not seem appropriate conversation, particularly from a total strange r,† (Lombardi). Despite of that incident, their friendship continued as both of them became prolific writers. Hemingway was not yet that famous during that time but Fitzgerald already had known something about Hemingway as Fitzgerald told his editor that Hemingway had the potential in literature (Lombardi). Fitzgerald assisted Hemingway in editing and promoting Hemingway’s work. Despite of the help given by Fitzgerald, it was said that Hemingway later on paid back Fitzgerald by mockery and deception as their friendship corroded (Kakutani). Some said that Hemingway had a habit of associating himself with famous and great writers to promote his works and advance his writing career. He associated himself with Gertrude Stein, John dos Passos, Dorothy Parker and many more (Lombardi). The friendship corroded especially in 1936 when Fitzgerald published the confessional article which he called The Crack-Up and the series of insults continued. Hemingway told something about Fit zgerald in his work The Snows of Kilimanjaro. Up until the death of Fitzgerald, Hemingway showed some insults for Fitzgerald through his works (Gent). For the next part, a focus would be given for the analysis of the short stories made by each writer and how the stories reflected their lives. The short story analysis begins with the works of Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald became well-known for his short stories in Flappers and Philosophers that reflected the youth culture and pursuit for wealth during the Roaring Twenties. During that time, the demands for stories in popular magazines were the type of stories made by Fitzgerald. His major success was in the field of short stories though in public he was known as the Poet Laureate of the Jazz Age and he even influenced other famous writers like J. D. Salinger and John O'Hara (Mangum 1368). The image of Fitzgerald really differs from his real accomplishment like his real self is different from the way he projected himself in public. Also as h e deemed himself to be good at writing short stories for popular magazines, he explained it to Hemingway the reason why he had chosen to write short stories as revealed in A Moveable Feast by Hemingway: he was â€Å"whoring but that he had to do it as he made his money from the magazines to have money ahead to write decent books,† (Mangum 57). Government Intervention in the Memphis City School System There are many factors that contribute to how teachers will teach their students. The student’s background knowledge, learning style, and interest levels are all very important to take into consideration when constructing a lesson. But teachers have to answer to parents, principles, administrators, school boards, state standards committees, and governmental agencies in addition to their students when it comes fulfilling their job description. One of the most well know government intervention plans that teachers have to adapt to is No Child Left Behind, implemented by the Bush administration in 2002 to help close the gap between under-performing and exemplary schools. The over arching idea is commendable; provide children with a quality education regardless of where they go to school. Schools have to make the grade in order to receive additional government funding and those that consistently fail to hit its goal will completely overhauled in order to achieve improvement. One school system that has been a consistent poor performer is the Memphis City School System. In their desperation to close the achievement gap the Memphis City School Board has surrendered its charter and proposed a vote to merge with its successful counterpart, the Shelby County school system. The surrender of the charter puts the responsibility of providing education for the districts previously run by the city on the shoulders of the Shelby County government, because according to Tennessee state law 49-1-102: â€Å"There shall be a local public school system operated in each county or combination of counties. There may be a local public school system operated in a municipality or special school distri... ...How do you get the community at large to get behind the merge? What will happen to any funds left over from the Gates Foundation donation to the city? Will the consolidation of systems affect the amount of Federal funding provided to the new system through Race to the Top? Personally I think this is a short sighted solution to a problem city school administration and School Board Members cannot seem to find a solution to, which is breaking through the poverty and racial barriers to AYP achievement. Yes, the demographic is unfortunate but forcing this solution on the city and county will not help race relations it will only increase the tension. This merger is another poorly planned government intervention that is bound to fail unless it gains community support and implements a carefully constructed plan for success. We’ll just have to wait and hope for the best.

Michael Harper’s Discovery

Michael Harper’s poem, Discovery is a poem of love. It gives us a unique way of defining and realizing true love. Indeed the poem is narrative and has free verse – and it expresses an occasion where the narrator discovers the care which the other person, a female shows toward him/her- such is the significance of the title, Discovery. Yet love although universally defined as the â€Å"feeling of warmth and concern for other persons† must be qualified here. My reading of the poem suggests that it is a romantic kind of love that is expressed between two individuals; a male (the narrator) and a female (the narrator’s partner in the poem). Truly, the degree of love revealed in the poem is overwhelming which caused the narrator to ask why I in the fifth line. The ellipses used after that emphasizes on possible uncertainties, thoughts that the narrator pondered upon while in her cradle of affection. This being the case, the sentiment of enigma is pictured probably due to the relative bewilderment of the narrator to the beauty that is being showed by the woman despite the narrator’s imperfections. The setting is night time on bed (they laid together in the dark); the two are close to each other (the narrator could hear her breath); as presented by lines one and two. It is quite possible for lovers to sleep together and engage in an act like sex. Harper has thought of convincing the readers of the reality of the narrator’s emotion by attending to the facts, by way of description, that are happening while the narrator is sleeping. Just like love, it may or may not be seen, only felt. When love is true, the person does not wish for it to be recognized nor expect returns from act of pretense. Such is the beauty of love in the poem; it has been measured by the warmth of the light (bulb) – as it is common to metaphorically describe love through the sensations of warmth. The eyes have always been the window of our inner passion; and touch and kiss signify intimacy. The author rightly used the line; she was staring at me with her eyes, to demonstrate the act of looking over a loved one in the coldness of the night; and the line a little shaken as she stroked my skin and kissed nay brow, to literally project sweetness. Although the challenging night’s condition was not directly written in the poem, it is implied especially when line number eight says, her thigh warming mine. The line, her breasts still sturdy could be a depiction of an aged woman who despite the fading strength in the context of age and experience has shown vitality or could also mean a period of arousal which is demonstrated as a prelude to a more intimate encounter by a woman. The poem reveals more of the scene that takes place after their love making. People of today has a general belief that â€Å"sex† no longer possesses the same sanctity as before – that the act could be done with or without love. The poem defies the latter by showing that it is most enjoyable when at the end of the act it self, love and joy is felt. The line in the poem tells us that the lover aimed at analyzing his/her partner in the silence of the night while sleeping and unveils sincerity through simple acts of kissing the brows. The agenda of the poem is to make us understand why love remains a feeling that we have to discover. Other ways become tools for this detection; like the light turned on and the heat which would reveal how long the woman had looked and cared for the narrator. It is hot, burning hot meaning deep and true. The narrator discovers true love here which treats sex secondary only to the feeling of closeness, sincerity and care which are all metaphorically disclosed in the poem. It serves as a lesson for all of us on the virtue of love and the significance of sex. True love can sustain itself without sex, although as an expression of love, sex regains its necessity. The beauty of love making lies on the feeling of security after the act which the narrator felt in the end of the poem – security from threats of lies, infidelity and uncertainties.
